Imperia's surroundings also deserves a visit. On the west side of town, just after the Caramagna Stream, there is a fascinating road in which the via crucis points are placed and continues up to a hill which is called Monte Calvario since 1698. Here you can admire the beuatiful landscape of Prino, Caramagna and Parasio Valleys. On the top of this last one you can distinguish the San Maurizio Cathedral, in front of which there is The Naval Museum and the Pinacoteca. At the extreme west side there is the Prarola Tower,a rampart built in XVI century as western bulwark of the Prino Valley, surrounded today by the sea because of the phenomenon of erosion and backing of the tide in this point.
In the east side of the town, on the hill, which offers a charming overview of Oneglia, you can notice the glamorous “Grock Villa”, which was built by the famous Swiss clown who lived for years in Imperia, since 1930. In this side of the town you can visit San Giovanni Church and the Olive Museum. We also must not forget the ancient villages (boroughs) and Oneglia and Porto Maurizio harbours. Few kilometers out of town, in a few fractions of the Prino Valley there are monuments of historical importance such as: in Piani the Assunta Church, in Clavi the Romanic bridge and the San Giorgio Church, in Torrazza the ancient tower built against the barbarians and in the Caramagna valley the most important monument is the N.S. delle Grazie Sanctuary, placed in Montegrazie, which overlooks the valleys as far as the sea.
